Metaphor has been viewed as a figure of speech for a long time until the masterpiece Metaphor We Live by was published by Lakoff and Johnson in 1980. In this book, metaphor is considered as a matter of thought, a way of cognition. It is embodied in nature and plays an important role in organizing our conceptual system. The conceptual metaphor theory has been applied in a variety of disciplines and has brought about lots of fruits. However, systematicity of conceptual metaphor in sports news is far from enough. On the other hand, in modern society, sports becomes more and more important in international communication, especially after the 29th Olympic Games in China, Chinese people start a upsurge of sports. In view of this, the author selected the dynamic and timely reports as the object of research. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches are employed to analyze a number of metaphorical expressions drawn from 28 reports both in English and Chinese respectively. This paper attempts to prove more experimental supports for Lakoff's conceptual theory with the contrastive study. The findings of study reveal that due to the common bodily experiences shared by human beings, the metaphorical concepts in the two languages are of great similarities. So many different metaphorical expressions can formulate the same concepts. However, owing to the differences in culture and ideological concepts, the metaphorical expressions and some metaphor concepts in the two languages bear their distinctive characteristics respectively. Besides, the study further proved the cognitive nature of metaphor, and its universality and systematicity.I hope this thesis will help in the evaluation of metaphors. I also hope these results can help people further know the sports culture in west.
