Self-organizing network is a wireless multi-hop network which consists of mobile nodes. It can be organized rapidly and temporarily without any basic infrastructure. Nodes in the network are considered as routers of neighbors, communication between nodes is implemented by forwarding. As character of self-organizing network differs from that of traditional network, mobility of nodes and frequently changed topology make it difficult to measure some parameters of self-organizing network in traditional measuring technology. Thus, it's very important that measurement of self-organizing network is studied.In this thesis, a new measurement system for self-organizing network is studied. Considering character of self-organizing network, the idea of active network is introduced, and an inter-position measurement system for self-organizing network is designed, and implemented in OPNET.Measuring probes of the inter-position measurement system are not only the end nodes of end-to-end measurement, but they also forward and handle data in the network as a part of self-organizing network. The inter-position measurement system can measure end-to-end delay, packet lost rate, bottleneck bandwidth, etc. It can also collect the information of intermediate nodes in the network according to the need of users.The thesis consists of several parts: First, the character of self-organizing network and simulation tool OPNET used to establish the measurement system is introduced. Then the traditional measurement technology, the concept of active network, and the system architecture of the inter-position measurement system for self-organizing network integrating the idea of active network are described. After this, the design and implementation of each functional module is introduced in detail. Finally, statistics measured by the inter-position measurement system are analyzed, and the effectiveness of the system is verified. Meanwhile, some problems existing in the system are explained, and the probable direction of the study in future is proposed.
