In recent years, with the development of hardware,impulse width can be dozens of picosecond(the amplitude of the base-band impulse which produced by Step Recovery Diode is about 20v ~ 200v, duration 50ps ~ 200ps),If the duty cycle is 10%, the baud rate will up to 500Mbps ~ 2Gbps. In the impulse transmission, the transmitter directly use small excitation antenna, does not require Upconverter which required by traditional transceiver, thereby avoiding the need for power amplifier and frequency converter. In addition, the receiver does not require expensive, bulky IF equipment, so the transceiver's structure is more easier than traditional structure. If adding ranging capabilities on the basis of impulse communication. The system will be able to achieve the impulse communication and ranging complex system. Compared with a single function (communication or ranging) system, the impulse communication and ranging complex system is not only can be used for aircraft communications and ranging, but also greatly enhance the utilization of the electromagnetic spectrum and the utilization of the equipment and systems. So it is very important to study the technology of impulse.The thesis introduced the history of impulse communication and some basic knowledge of the ranging theory firstly, including three basic ranging methods, the comparison between these methods and the current international situation. Then proposed a new impulse communication and ranging complex system, and introduced the working principle of the system, analysised the performance of the system. The softwire simulation processed with Matlab-Simulink, and the hardwire design is implemented on the Xilinx Virtex-4 SX35 FPGA with VHDL.Finally, the system can achieve an effective communication rate (average) for 2.5Mbps, and the rate of ranging is 6.4k. At the end of the thesis, some suggestions were imposed to resolve the problems in the design.
