Natural terrain visualization can be a intuitive, true expression of the three-dimensional topographic information and geological features, It has broad application value and prospects in various fields especially in oil field exploration and development in the national economy. With the computer technology wide applying in three-dimensional system of geology and geography, this paper draws on computer graphics, computer science, geographic information systems, and many other fields the results of a large number of advanced theories .It systematically disscuss and analyse relevant theories, technologies and algorithms of Natural terrain visualization implementation based on Open Inventor. It includes terrain modeling and the basic theory of terrain modeling, Three-dimensional geometric modeling technology, principle and related technologies on Open Inventor,natural terrain of the main types of modeling data,gridding algorithm of scattered data,and implementation technology of Human-Computer Interaction.Based on the above theories and results, to Windows XP systems and Visual C + + 6.0 as a platform, An improved discrete data gridding algorithm was proposed, It set up a system framework suitabling the development of three-dimensional visualization. It completed the natural terrain visualization system of real-time browsing baseing Open Inventor. It can accept data and VIP pre-processing, achieve illumination ,texture mapping and different modes of three-dimensional terrain visualization, it has real-time dynamic browsing, inquiries of three-dimensional coordinates,three-dimensional graphic display of information and property features.This issue has important theoretical and practical significance. In theory it analyzed on improved discrete data gridding algorithm, the natural terrain modeling, inquiries of three-dimensional coordinates and other natural terrain visualization implementation of related technologies.At the application it built a digitized , visualization , intelligent three-dimensional terrain visualization dynamically generated and real-time browsing system. It provides a scientific and effective, simple and intuitive analysis of visualization.
