The first question needed to solve in any graphical information system software is to have a kind of suitable data structure and data model. The huge data of grid proposes a higher request for the capacity and handling ability of a computer and also brings difficult to the memory, transmission, calculation and drawing of the model. Thus, different information systems have different demands for the simplification of concrete data and model.This paper which is based on the three-dimensional data storage structure and the data content, uses the object-oriented thought to establish data structure, adopts the vector model to definite the format of model. The edge collapse method based on quadric error metrics is applied to realize the simplification of grid data. In order to keep the model with proper topology structure and character structure, this paper compares several method, and drawing lessons from a method for calculating volume error. The combination of this measure and folding algorithm have some advantages of folding algorithm such as quick speed and characteristic retentivity, especially keeping the whole structure orderly. VC 2005 is used as a developed tool to design data structures and apply the structure to mesh simplification. In the instance of mesh simplification, the focus of mesh simplification is on the process instead of auxiliary information such as illumination, material and texture.The instance verifies that it is applicable to adopt improved method, and expectant effect has been attained. With the precision and complexity of the 3D model increasingly improved, the scientific data construction and the reasonable mesh algorithm will have broad performance in some spheres such as manufacture, military and geography information.
