Visual simulation technology,as a rising discipline,has been widely interested and applied.As a basis of visual simulation,the simplification of three-dimensional geometrical modeling is one of the hot spots of present research.The three-dimensional geometrical modeling with a large amount of data will bring much difficulty on the storage,transmission,rendering and so on;But in many occasions, the objective of making some process on three-dimensional geometrical modeling is just to meet visual needs.Therefore,we could substitute simply geometrical modeling for complex original model when under similar modeling conditions.Thus,that will reduce data and improve processing speed and save storage.At present,modeling simplification algorithm taken geometric position changes after edge collapse as a collapse cost.The proposed algorithm is lack of well consideration on keeping visual effects of modeling and leads to rapid changes of modeling visual features. After doing enough analysis and research on simplification algorithm and all kinds of simplification rules for geometrical modeling at home and abroad,the paper puts forward an improved modeling simplification algorithm:quadric error metric edge collapse algorithm based on normal important degree of triangular facets.Based on the quadric error metric and edge collapse algorithm,the algorithm takes control on normal with more important degree and avoid the high-degree edges collapsing.The new algorithm speeds up the model simplification procedure and imptoves the quality of model simplification.The new algorithm ensures surfaces of modeling well-proportioned.Lastly,the tool application for model simplification was developed with Visual C++6.0 and OpenGL.Many mesh models are simplified using this application to prove the validity of the new algorithm.This algorithm is quickly and easy to implement.The new algorithm improves the modeling simplication speed and keeps visual effect well.
