With the development of science and technology, the complexity of modelsthat constructed and dealled with in the computer graphics, and the virtual reality ishigher and higher. There are special requests for the computation speed, the transmissionspeed, and the real-time display of the computer in these fields, which makes thecontradiction between the model complexity and the computer hardware performance moreand more obvious. Thus the model simplification technology was developed at the historicmoment. Recently the model simplification technology became the focus studied in thecomputer graphics. One part work of this paper is to carry on the significativeexploration in this aspect. In this studies, the paper studied the Garland 's quadric error metric algorithm as thekey research, which took the edge collapse as the elementary operation. Someinsufficiencies were pointed out. Analyzed the reason, a weighting quadric error metricsimplification algorithm was presented based on the improvement of the original algorithm. Finally, the experiment has proved its validity. In addition, the tool software for triangle mesh simplification was developed withVC++6.0 platform and OpenGL, the outstanding three dimensional graphic library, in thispaper. It integrated the Garland quadric error metric (QEM) simplification algorithm andthe improved one based on this. This software not only can process the model scenes of*.dxf and *.3ds form , but also has the render and interactive function. The test resultindicated that this system achieved the project goal and worked well.
