following the rapid development of the Internet, we can see digital videos such as streaming media everywhere. At the same time, the video compression technology plays an important role in the digital video processing domain. As the newest video compression technology, H.264 has higher compression ratio and better clarity, but it also has higher processing complexity. So it is very hard for the real time processing of H.264 encoder. After the deep analysis on H.264 encoder, this paper accomplishes the implementation and optimization based on TMS3220DM6437.Firstly, this paper researches and analyses every module of H.264 encoder, besides, it also analyses the time consuming of these modules. Then, inter prediction, intra prediction and motion estimation are the most time consuming modules. This paper optimizes these modules respectively.Secondly, this paper analyses the hardware resources in TMS320DM6437 which are designed for video processing. Then, based on the resources, this paper implements and optimizes the H.264 encoder. The optimizing methods include compiler optimization, the C program language optimization, configuration of DSP/BIOS, adjusting the structure of program and data, Cache optimization, intrinsics optimization, EDMA3 optimization, using C64IMGLIB, memory scheduling and linear assembly.Through these optimizing approaches, the processing speed of the H.264 encoder increases distinctly. It accomplishes the real time encoding of cif format video. Besides, the D1 format video encoding speed achieves 15fps.
