Background: Health risk appraisal is a technology to examine the quantitative relationship between the risk factors and the morbidity and mortality of chronic diseases. It studies the probability of death of a patient in an environment with risk factors, and the changes of mortality and risk as well as a possible extension of life expectancy when the risk factors are eliminated. Depending on the object and scope of application, this technique can be divided into individual health assessment and group evaluation. The main roles of this technique are described as follows:①Finding out the unhealthy lifestyles to stimulate and educate individuals to establish healthy lifestyles.②Identifying potential risk factors for early intervention, and③predicting disease processes.Practice in foreign countries shows that health risk appraisal is the most successful application of computer services in clinical prevention. The results of computer are more persuasive than the doctor's advice, which can urge patients to give up unhealthy lifestyles and help community doctors to improve the level of automatic diagnosis for health status. Furthermore, it can improve the level of health management scientifically and rationally, make up the status lacking general doctors, and further improve the health of residents. Health risk appraisal has become a very important part of health care system, and has been proved to be effective in reducing the risk of personal health and medical expenses. However, health risk appraisal is so complicated that direct application is very difficult in their daily work. As the risk factors vary in different regions and in different groups,it is necessary to develop health risk appraisal software according to demographic data, health risk factors, and mortality of study area.In this study, computer software for health risk appraisal was developed according to the demographic data, health risk factors, and mortality of community residents in Shapingba District in Chongqing municipality.Methods: Using PowerBuilder 9.0 to develop software for health risk appraisal, which could directly calculate the risk scores, combined risk scores, death probability, new combined risk scores, new morality probability, appraisal age, achievable age, the reduced degree of risk and the risk type of individuals and give reports of the health risk appraisal. sql server was chose as background database.Results: General information and information of risk factors were recorded with the drop-down box of the health risk appraisal software. Then risk scores, combined risk scores, mortality probability, appraisal age, achievable age, the reduced degree of risk and the risk type of individual person were calculated. With the software analysis, it is more easily to understand the individual information of risk factors, give advice for health lifestyles, track risk factors, and give a final health risk appraisal report. Furthermore, data collection can be done for group appraisal.Conclusion: Health risk appraisal software can change the complicated progress of health risk appraisal into an easy and practical computer process. Through individual evaluation, rapid assessment of the results could be fed back to the evaluated object, based on which it can give the proposal targeting to lower the risk factors. Through group appraisal, the lifestyles of evaluated individuals can be divided into types of health, historical risk factors and general risks. The persons with the highest level of danger are the focus objects of prevention and cure. According to the proportion of the population with risk factors that are difficult to change and with self-made risk factors, you can avoid the risk factors with targeted intervention. Furthermore, through comparing types of health risk and health levels of different Demographic characteristics, this technique provides a reference for targeted interventions and the rational distribution of health resources and health funds.
