Direct Digital Frequency Synthesis (abbr. DDS or DDFS) is a new technique in recent years. It introduces the advanced theory and method of digital signal processing to the frequency synthesis fields, marking the emergency of the third frequency synthesis. With the development of digital circuit and microelectronic techniques, the advantage of DDS is more and more apparent. Today DDS is widely used in radar system, communication system, electronic instrument and electronic countermeasure. The theory and basic structure of DDS is first detailed analyzed in the design, the double system is achieved based on MCU and FPGA through the study. The hierarchy structure of the signal generator is described in detail. The idea of the hardware design and software design about the structure is introduced. In the design, the EPF10K10LC84-4 of Altera company and AT89C51 are chosen as the core device, MAX+PLUS (II) and Keil c51 are use as the developing tools, and hardware description language (VHDL) and C programming language are used for the software design. The result indicated that the performance of the system is coincided with the request, and had the advantage of using simple and high integration, compared with the traditional arbitrary waveform generator(AWG),It is obvious to see that waveform generated by the AWG has some advantages , such as smooth waveform, stable frequency and high resolve.DDS is one of the advanced techniques among the frequency synthesis .But it has inherent shortcoming in bandwidth on signal synthesizing. So it is limited to used in more fields. Some advice is given about the work of next step so that they can have a more perfect performance.
