Because of a series of advantages such as high thermal efficiency, wide power range and better adaptability, diesel engine is world-wide popular. So how to enhance the performance of speed governor in order to improve the diesel engine power, economy and the protection of the environment has became an important research direction of locomotive diesel engine technology.First, we introduct traditional control strategies of digital governor. By analyzing the problems of previous PID control algorithm and fuzzy control algorithm, the thought of fuzzy logic control based on variable universe is proposed to satisfy the real-time and accurate demand. The domain varies along with the change of deviation, so that adjusting the amount of diesel fuel injection more quickly and accurately can improve the performance of diesel engine speed governor's controller.Secondly, simulation models are built based on locomotive diesel engine type 16V240ZJB. We utilize the fuzzy logic toolbox and SIMULINK of MATLAB to compare the performance of variable universe fuzzy control with traditional algorithms. It is observed that variable universe fuzzy control can improve control quality and solve the problem of convergence and oscillation.Finally, we design a variable universe fuzzy controller of governor making use of FPGA technology. The controller consists of three modules which are fuzzy module, fuzzy reasoning module and anti-fuzzy module. According to the idea of reusable IP and the technical characteristics of FPGA, we discuss variable universe fuzzy controller IP design based on Avalon bus.
