As the development of group communication application like teleconference and information dissemination service, there is a growing popularity on the research of multicast, and a number of reliable multicast protocols have been proposed. As the reliable requirement of various multicast applications, this topic, a sub-issue under the Euro-China Grid InterNetwork (EC-GIN), focuses on multicast congestion control model and reliable model and developing the Reliable Multicast middleware in order to integrate to GINTONIC middleware (the main achievement of project EC-GIN)However, a critical problem that all multicast protocols have to deal with is an efficient congestion control mechanism. Without adequate congestion control algorithm, the application of the multicast protocols may lead to terrible network congestion and a low multicast throughput. As the increasing scope of network and complex network environment, the reliability of multicast faces much more challenges. There are three schemes which can support reliability: completely distributed, half distributed and centralized. Meantime, the interacting applications need the reliability for multi-sender in a multicast application. This thesis discusses the key technology questions in multicast congestion control firstly, such as feedback, filtering of congestion feedback. Then summarize current multicast congestion control schemes and reliable multicast protocols. The followings are the big picture of GINTONIC and each functional module. Also we would describe the meaning of each reliable multicast parameter. As the core part of this thesis, a more efficient multicast scheme including a multicast congestion mechanism (GINMCC) and supporting reliability for multiple senders is proposed. The simulation results derived from NS-2 show that GINMCC outperforms the traditional mechanism and obtain a better TCP-friendly.However, as the multicast and grid applications are limited in a local scope, the results of this paper are derived from simulations. There is a lot work being done to implement multicast in real network in the future.
