With the rapid development of Information Technology nowadays, internet has been widely used all over the world. And Multimedia Technology has therefor a promising perspective. As a core module of multimedia system, the research of video compression has become a hot spot currently. H.264/AVC is the most advanced video standard in the world, it can reduce half of the bitrate when compared to H.263 or MPEG-4. Besides, H.264 has high compatibility with various networks. Therefor, H.264 is very suitable for realtime video communication.It is very flexible to use programmable multimedia digital signal processor to implement video codec. The new generation DSP TMS320DM642 offers high industry-leading performance. It's working frequency can be up to 600MHz. It has 8 independent functional units and two levels of cache. Besides, It's network peripheral interface can greatly reduce the system cost for multimedia applications. Therefor, TMS320DM642 is an ideal platform for implementing video encoder.The paper first studied on the critical technologies in H.264 based on the development of digital video compression. Then, the paper researched the optimization of the H.264 compression algorithms such as intra and inter prediction. We also compared the optimized algorithms to the originals using simulation data. After that, we transplanted the software encoder to DM642, studied on the optimization methods of DM642 and did further research on how to speed up the encoder. From the data we can see that the speed of the encoder is greatly improved.The first chapter is brief introduction of video compression. The second chapter is about the important technologies used in H.264. The third chapter is the research of TMS320DM642.The fourth chapter is the algorithm optimization. The fifth chapter is about the implementation of encoder on TMS320DM642. The last chapter is conclution and outlook.
