As a support for cost calculation and process planning, engineering budgeting is of great value in industrial architecture's design. However, traditional methods used for this purpose take designers a lot of time and workload and their efficiency is very low. The research on industrial architecture's budgeting based on 3D models will not only result in a remarkable increase in efficiency, but also lead to emergence of CAD software systems incorporating the key functions of 3D structure design, annotation and drawing output, and automatic engineering budgeting. This paper presents our major research results obtained in the development of this kind of industrial architecture's 3D design and budgeting systems, which is supported by one of our industrial project"3D design system for hot blast stove".Firstly, this paper puts forward a parametric modeling method based on 3D model partitions with material distributions in the 3D design area. Through a detailed shape classification analysis, the method defines parametric shape patterns and patterns library by means of geometric features and constraints in 3D CAD systems, and verifies whether model parameters specified by users are valid or not, by using a kind of shape coding methods.Secondly, this paper presents a new stuff budgeting method based on the 3D multilayer assembly framework. After finishing the brick layout of each block's 3D model for certain material, the whole industrial architecture is a multilayer assembly in framework. So, this paper puts forward a material calculation method that compares and merges related quantities in the direction of down-top. In addition, this method realizes the integration of budgeting and database queries and storages under help of 3D shape and material matching.Finally, this paper develops methods for automatic drawing output and semi-automatic labeling. After finishing the design and budgeting, the system will export the drawings at sections as well as the major overall projections specified in the log files kept in database, and realizes the semi-automatic textual label output using Inventor model's internal data structures.Based on the above methods, the author with coworkers develops a prototype system for industrial architecture's 3D design and budgeting on the Inventor platform by using the object -oriented programming technology and Visual C++. The system includes modules of 3D modeling, brick layout, automatic budget and 2D output. The system has passed a primary test with the application in the project of hot blast stove, and thus the correctness and feasibility of the above given methods are validated to some degrees.
