With the rapid prevalence of Internet all around the world, streaming media spreads and develops very fast. The traditional way of seeing after downloading is not suitable for nowadays' demand of efficiency, so it is very natural that streaming media appears and develops. Meanwhile , the increasing of netizen's number and the finity of internet bandwidth decide that unicast is not capable to deal with lots of clients which can lead to waste of bandwidth and internet jam. To solve these problems, multicast appears. For the given reasons above , the thesis researches on technologies of streaming media and multicast, then summarizes how to create a multi-media system.The technologies of streaming media consists of producing, releasing, transforming and playing. The thesis analyses and researches on the characteristics of transforming protocols, enumerates file formats and compressing formats of streaming media. And all of these streaming media techniques can be understood as a whole. Then, the thesis researches on the techniques of multicast, including analysing multicast address, IGMP protocol and some regular multicast arithmetics.Based on the research of techniques mentioned above, the thesis sums up the architecture and skills of the media system. Then with system requirement analysed, the system were devided into three subsystems: server, collector and client. It describes how to design the three subsystems, and how to communicate among them. The system is developed upon DirectShow, using component technology to enhance its ability to be portable. Some defects of current streaming system are analysed in the thesis, and some techniques are also used to rectify them. At the end, system tests are finished, and the test result is analyzed.
