Shooting training is one of the most basic items in military training. The manual target reporting system is used in traditional military shooting training, which has some disadvantages such as inefficiency, low-precision and potential hazard. With development of military training modernization, the equipment for shooting training is updated continuously and developed towards automation. There are some kinds of automatic target reporting technologies, such as audio-electronic target reporting system, optical-electronic automatic target reporting system and target reporting system based on image processing technology. The same principle is applied for the first two systems, with the application of some relevant sensors to locate the bullet point by detecting the physical effect once the bullets get through the target. They both have high demands on hardware, and installation and calibration are also complicated. Consequently, in consideration of the cost, they are not suitable for promotion.Due to the disadvantages of those target reporting systems, an embedded real-time automatic target reporting system is proposed in this paper, which is based on the union of digital image processing and DSP technology. A small image capturing-processing platform is designed in the system. It captures the target-surface image continuously by image sensor OV7141 from OmniVision Technologies Inc. The TI's multi-media DSP TMS320DM642 is adopted as the core processor to make real-time image processing, calculate and output the coordinates. The target-surface video is displayed by video encoder SAA7105. The detailed" hardware design of image capturing module, image processing module, video display module, asynchronous serial port module and power management module are presented in this paper.The automatic target reporting system has the advantages of high precision, real-time computing, small-size design, software portability and convenience of upgrading. Hence, it can improve the shooting training efficiency and avoid the incorrect judgment out of subjective causes of the spotters. Meanwhile, the spotters' personal safety can also be guaranteed to some extent. Therefore, it can measure up to the requirement of safety and efficiency for shooting training.
