Over the past several decades, the theory and technology of virtual reality has been in constant updates, and with the social progress and the rapid development of science and technology, it has been widely applied in various fields. By the application of the virtual reality technology, to create virtual world and to create, work, live and study in this virtual world are no longer a dream for us. One can set up virtual shops on line, and carry out analog shopping for real; one can design a virtual factory and its internal structure according to the conditions of the real environment and make the operation of virtual simulation in pursuit of the greatest returns on investment. At the scope of application of geographical science, the virtual reality technology has also challenged the traditional way of planning and design. For example, the city planning has been greatly enhanced in the way that the real construction is conducted under the guidance of a virtual planning. In the so-called"Second-life"developed by the Linden Lab of The United States, the Users are referred to as"residents"and have their own currency—Linden Coins, which can be exchanged for the real dollars at the ratio of 300 to 1 at a number of well-known U.S. banks. In addition, the users can also purchase"land"as a home, a store, a market-place and so on. As can be seen from the above description, the virtual reality technology is being updated all the time and will be applied to all possible areas.A crucial problem of network management is how to present the complex network to the network administrators in a direct and vivid way. However, with the expansion of network, the increase of network elements and the growing complexity of the relations between these elements, network topology is enlarged so quickly that to display and manage a great deal of complex information quickly and easily has become the bottleneck of two-dimensional user interface and the past static HTML homepage can no longer satisfy the needs of users. In this case the network administrators are often unable to identify the spot of faults quickly and accurately so as to reduce the quality of network services. The thesis writer holds to this view that the use of virtual reality technology can enhance the visualization of network information and increase the efficiency of network management comprehensively, and that this would be a trend. Through the study of related materials, the thesis writer finds that there are just a few of researches on the application of virtual reality technology in network management, which are far from being enough, so in the light of the experience gained as a staff in network management and the expertise of postgraduate study, the writer chooses the application of virtual reality technology in the campus network management as research subject. This thesis, firstly, introduces the features of virtual reality technology and theory, and describes the Web-based computer network management system, and based on the study of the campus network management through the VR theory and technology, this thesis makes a feasibility analysis of the combination of virtual reality technology and network management; and this thesis also describes the function of desktop virtual network system, and makes a detailed design of its structure; then, this thesis provides the application framework of the desktop virtual reality of the campus network management and a detailed operational flow; at the same time, it offers the solution to the cruel problems of the construction of this system, such as scene modeling, scene optimization, collision detection, scene interactive, reality feedback and so on; and finally, with an independent experimental test, it verifies the feasibility of the desktop virtual network management system. During the experimental test, the first step is to make a virtual 3D scene and a model of the campus network equipment, and set up property-related databases, and then, realize partially scene walkthrough and scene interactive function by the use of programming technology, such as VRML, X3D and so on. At last, this thesis summarizes the work done at this stage, points out the weakness, and makes clear the direction for future study.
