Research Of LOD Technology In Large-scale Urban Scene Virtual Reality

Large-scale urban scene virtual roaming, which is widely applied in many fields, is one of the important branches of virtual reality technology. LOD (Level of Details) is one of the pivotal technologies to develop it.Static LOD is the general choice for urban scene virtual roaming. Model management and the choice strategy of LOD are the keys of the static LOD. Based on the analysis of typical model management and the choice strategy of LOD, the thesis proposes an advanced unified strategy which is designed for the urban scene virtual roaming with static LOD. This strategy can make overall plans and take both model management and the choice strategy of LOD into consideration. It reduces the communication between the computer memory and secondary storage, consequently reduces the burden of management thread, gives a better solution to the choke point of static LOD, and achieves several choice strategies of LOD once for all.The thesis still mentions an advanced unified strategy for the high speed virtual roaming based on prediction, which can smooth the peak of system burden caused by static LOD algorithm. Both analytic and the experimental results show that the strategies presented in this paper can get better performance in the urban scene virtual roaming environment with static LOD.
