In recent years, ship detection and surveillance using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images has received considerable attentions in the area of marine remote sensing. This issue has been one of the most important marine applications of SAR data. In order to extract the ship target information from SAR images quickly and effectively, the study on automatic detection algorithm is urgently needed , especilly when great amount of SAR images are used in ship target detection. The main work of this paper is the reasearch of ship wake detection from SAR images, which is an important aspect of marine applications of SAR images. The state-of-the-art of the study of ship wake detection using SAR images is reviewed. Based on the study of the theory of the understanding of SAR images, the characteristics and appearances of different types of ship wake are analyzed. The simulation of Kelvin wake is completed, through analyzing the imaging model of Kelvin wake.In the area of ship wake detection, the factors which affected the production of wake are analyzed firstly. According to the principle of Radon transform and Hough transform used to linear feature detection, ship wake detection based on Radon transform and Hough transform is achieved by using simulation data, and the detection performance of these two method is compared and analyzed.According to the characteristics of the ship wakes in SAR image, several feature parameters related to ship wakes is proposed, including ship orientation parameter and ship speed parameter. The match and test criterion is also given. Using parameter caculation method and match criterion , the estimation of ship speed parameter is obtained. The experimental results testified the validation of the proposed method.
