In recent years, ship detection and surveillance in Remote-sensing images has received considerable attentions in the area of marine remote sensing. This issue has been one of the most important marine applications of remote-sensing data. The study on automatic detection algorithm is urgently needed when great amount of remote-sensing images are used in ship target detection. This study can extract information of ship targets quickly and effectively. This paper, which background is ocean application of remote-sensing images, studies on the aspects of ship target detection, ship wake detection, ship feature extraction and establishment. All these are key aspects in remote-sensing images application. This paper focuses on ship target detection, wake detection and the result implementation. At first, the generating mechanisms of four kinks of wake features are studied in the paper. We have simulated the features of ocean surface waves, Kelvin wake, narrow V wake, turbulent wake and internal wake. All these are to let us get a full understanding of the model of these four kinds wake features. The existing algorithms of ship target detection are summarized. Using experimental results, the traits and the fitness scopes are analyzed for the two-parameter CFAR algorithm, the K-distribution CFAR algorithm and the local window based K-distribution CFAR algorithm. In the area of wake detection algorithm, after briefly listing the existing major wake detection methods, the mechanism of wake detection algorithms in remote-sensing images is summarized. Generally, there are two sorts of wake detection methods: one is based on the geometric characteristics of wakes and the other is based on the statistical differences between areas containing wakes and areas ocean background. At last, new wake detection methods are proposed, based on the deficiency of normal wake detection methods as RADON, HOUGH. After discussing the theoretical feasibility, the effectiveness of this algorithm is demonstrated by the test results of simulated wake images and actual remote-sensing images of ship wakes. The results indicate that these methods can detect some weak wakes in remote-sensing images effectively. According to the characteristics of the ship targets in Remote-sensing image, it is proposed that there are three types of ship feature. They are geometry feature, geographic feature and kinetic feature. The parameter estimation methods are also given, based on the study of target detection, wake detection and feature extraction.
