Distributed computing is an important field in computer science. With the developing of network technology, the QoS provided by distributed applications has become a key issue in evaluating their qualities. The iVCE (Internet-based Virtual Computing Environment), based on Internet, is a service platform which implements on-demand aggregation and autonomic collaboration of resources. The Internet has become an important information infrastructure which can provide unprecedented amount of resources. However, the resources are inherently dynamic and autonomous, which makes it hard to provide high QoS in the iVCE. To address these issues, a resource pool based resource aggregation mechanism is proposed in this paper. We have studied the resource aggregation mechanisms and QoS assurance techniques, and analyzed the advantages and drawbacks of the existing distributed computing systems. Then we present a resource pool based resource aggregation approach to providing certain QoS support in the iVCE. Resources are aggregated in a resource pool according to the requirement of applications. With resource pool, tasks can be carried out safely even when some nodes are spontaneously offline due to system failure, overload or any other accidents.A load balancing algorithm is presented to optimize the strategy of node selection and resource pool provisioning. For testifying the performance, we have implemented the resource pool mechanism in iVCE, and the experiments have been done. The experimental results show that the system QoS is significantly improved.
