Suspended sediment concentration is one of the most important parameters in water quality, and the major parameter in water environmental evaluation. Remote sensing can overcome the drawback of traditional methods of investigating suspended sediment, as slow speed, inefficiency, long period time, only getting discrete and small amounts of data in time and spatial distribution. Remote sensing is able to monitor the dynamic change and spatial distribution of suspended sediment concentration efficiently that it has great significance. This paper takes the retrieval and analysis of the surface suspended sediment concentration of Hebei Caofeidian offshore by Lansat5 TM data and oceanographic hydrological element. The study not only can provide parameters for the interaction between port construction and suspended sediment concentration transport, and numerical simulation of marine hydrodynamics, but also can provide scientific basis for the economic development and environment protection of Caofeidian. The main contents are as follows:1. The study of spectral characteristic of surface suspended sediment concentration in Caofeidian offshore;2. The study of relational model of spectral reflectance and surface suspended sediment concentration in Caofeidian offshore;3. The study of remote sensing information processing method of surface suspended sediment concentration in Caofeidian offshore;4. The study of remote sensing retrieval model of surface suspended sediment concentration in Caofeidian offshore;5. The study of spatial distribution characteristics of surface suspended sediment concentration in Caofeidian offshore. This study has educed the following finding and conclusions:1. The spectral reflection curve is different with the change of suspended sediment concentration. The reflectivity of water increases with suspended sediment concentration rising. The spectral reflection curve of suspended sediment concentration water has two obvious peaks, the first peak at the band of 550-600nm, the second peak at the band of 780-840nm. When the suspended sediment concentration is lower, the first peak value is higher than the second peak value, and when the suspended sediment concentration increases, the second peak value gradually rises. According the spectral characteristic of surface suspended sediment concentration, and the relativity analysis of observed spectral reflectance and observed suspended sediment concentration, band TM3, TM4 and the ratio of the remote sensing reflectance of TM3 and TM1 are the sensitive bands to the suspended sediment concentration;2. According to the choice of sensitive bands, we build the regression models by band TM3, TM4 and the ratio of the remote sensing reflectance of TM3 and TM1 with observed suspended sediment concentration(21 groups modeling data); the results of testing by observed suspended sediment concentration(9 groups test data) indicate that the logarithm model of TM3 SSC=104.481+32.557·LnR3 (SSC is the suspended sediment concentration, R3 is the remote sensing reflectance of TM3) has the better precise, the average absolute error is 2.8729mg/l, the average relative error is 25.8441%.3. By the model and TM image, get suspended sediment concentration distribution map in study area. The map directly reflects the spatial distribution of suspended sediment concentration in study area, and the result is in line with the actual situation.
