IFM (Instantaneous Frequency Measurement) is a kind of receivers which is used to Measure the Frequency of signal. IFM is the fast measurement of the carrier frequency of signal. There are several kinds of IFM, such as Channelized IFM, Frequency Discriminator IFM, IFM on interferometer and so on. IFM on interferometer is emphasized in this paper.By several decades' development, IFM technology becomes very mature on theoretic technology and plays a great part in the EW (Electronic Warfare) domain. In the ideal or simple electromagnetic environment, any kind of IFM can work well. However, with the development of radar technology, the model of radar signal has great changes, frequency agility technology is applied by most radars, the environment for use also changes and electromagnetism environment of the receiver becomes complex more and more. As a result, IFM of more high-powered is needed. At the same time, several requires about how to make good use of IFM are raised. Based on these requires, this paper presents the application in electronic warfare and several classic examples of the IFM. Also, according to the requires of the research indexes of IFM are analyzed .Project complement, index complement and difficulties of IFM are discussed detailed. The work of this paper offers certain gist and reference for the project application and project design of IFM.
