NPR (non-photorealistic rendering) refers to the technology for making computer-generated graphs with hand drawing style, rather than realistic effect as photograph. It focuses on the graph's feature, rather than the graph's authenticity. NPR is used to analogs works of art and it is an effective supplement of realistic graphs. In this paper, according to research on pencil drawing methods and analysis of drawing models both home and abroad, an automatic feature-based image / video pencil drawing method is put forward. Real image can be transformed into pencil drawing by applying these image processing techniques. The detailed work lists as following:First of all, based on Mao's algorithm, feature extraction method for pencil rendering is created, which extracts accurately the feature of the image contour and saved its results in the form of vector curves so as to adapt to the generation of pencil style.Secondly, in order to enrich pencil drawing contents, scattered data interpolation is introduced to draw strokes and then compensation method is used to optimize the obtained scattered points, which makes a pencil sketch closer to the effect of the human hand drawing. Finally, on the base of pencil drawing tool models introduced by Sousa and Buchanan, a new automatic pencil and paper model is raised.
