With the development of technology and the progress of civilization, people pay more attention to research about particles properties. Many methods and instruments have been developed to measure particles home and abroad, especially the method of light scattering is applied broadly for its particular strongpoint. The normal measuring methods for particles home and abroad are introduced, and their application ranges are also analyzed. The theory of light scattering and the Mie theory for particles measuring are analyzed. The approximate approaches of the Mie scattering theory are discussed for smaller and larger particles. The basic concept of soot particles is introduced. The changes of extinction coefficient with different sizes of particles are calculated by program, especially when the image of refraction coefficient being zero. Based on the theory of extinction method, we design and build the experimental estrade using CCD for the incepting apparatus. We get the transmission intensity of light with the experimental measure and calculate simulantly the size and concentration of soot parcels. The result shows that the extinction method which we use has good precision and reliabilities.
