The work of this paper is based on the project"Analysis and Design of Digital Musical Synthesizer"from Xidian University. The development of MIDI synthesis at present is reviewed simply, and the technology of FM synthesis which has been widely used is compared with Wave Table synthesis. After a detailed research on FM synthesis, a multiple channels musical synthesizer chip XDC18A based on digital frequency modulation is designed.There are nine channels which can produce tone synchronously in this chip, including two modes of sound generation and two types of frequency modulation. The built-in instruments ROM and tone register are two design characteristics of this musical synthesizer, and the design of these two modules simplifies the process of sound generation greatly. The design of key modules of this musical synthesizer is discussed primarily, such as register, phase generator, envelope generator. The other modules are also introduced simply.XDC18A is based on 0.6μm CMOS process, and the performance is validated by Cadence NC-Verilog and SpectreVerilog. Simulation results show that the functions are realized, and the design requirements are satisfied.
