In modern society, the development of the Content Based Image Retrieval System getting faster and faster, it contains more and more images. Modern image retrieval algorithms include color histogram, image-based texture and shape feature extraction algorithm. Color and shape are common features which were used in the Content Based Image Retrieval System. The color features which are irrespective to the light and can portray physical surface reflect properties that extracted in the image search process named Color Invariant Descriptor. Compared with other color features, Color Invariant Descriptor does not require accurate image lighting information, in many practical applications of computer vision problems (such as object recognition, image retrieval, etc.), Color Invariant Descriptor is much more practical and important.Because of the uncertainty of the color itself, it is easy impacted by the changes in illumination. To get a color descriptor that is robust to illumination and has the color constancy function is very important for the entire computer vision system. An object was shone with different light (in the different illumination), then it may form different color features. So if it does not consider the influence of the illumination on the object, there will be a great error in the image search result. Based on the existing image retrieval techniques, further researching the impact that the changes in illumination to the color characteristics is very significant to improve the image retrieval system performance, and then it would further enhance the results of image retrieval accuracy.This paper presents a new algorithm, as using the invariant matrix to compute the invariant description of the colors. The Algorithm makes full use of the color image information, the edge information and shape information, and it has good illumination invariance, because of the invariant matrix's scale invariance, translation invariance and rotation invariance, so new color descriptor is also invariant with these three characteristics. In this paper, the invariant matrix color descriptor will apply to the image retrieval system to get an illumination robust image retrieval system. After a large number of experiments, invariant matrix algorithm has a good performance in the whole search efficiency. As for the extraction of the little edge information image, the performance of this algorithm is better than some of other algorithms that already existed in domestic and abroad.
