Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), which integrates the technologies of sensor, micro-electro-mechanism system (MEMS), wireless communication and distributed computing, is a novel mode of computing and a hotspot of information technology after Internet. It will have a profound influence on many areas in 21st century. Internet changes the way people communicate and exchange, while WSN connects the physical world to the logical information world, and will bring on the revolution of the interacting mode between human and nature. Integrated with data collecting, processing and communicating, sensor networks are also inexpensive, easy to be placed and environmental adaptive, they have broad prospects in fields of military, environment, medical and family etc. How to build reliable sensor network application in limited resources is the key of the real sensor network application.. The thesis mainly discusses the mobile-based agent middleware using publish/subscribe technology for wireless sensor network architecture. The main objective of middleware for WSN is to shield the details of network and operating systems while facilitate the rapid deployment of applications. This paper firstly sums up the research of middleware for WSN and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of mobile agent based middleware, then introduces a new mobile agent based middleware using publish/subscribe mechanism which is aimed to improve agent migration strategy. Before migrating the mobile agent for application, the mobile agent-based middleware can use the publish/subscribe mechanism to build interest route in advance, which avoids the situations of migrating agent without knowing network state of uncertainty and enhance the transmission success rate of agent for application. Different from the traditional publish/subscribe mechanism, the design uses interest agent and notification agent to build interest route, which takes full account of the architecture of mobile agent-based middleware without introducing complex data structures and control procedure. This paper evaluates its performance compared to the traditional working mechanisms of the mobile agent based middleware from perspectives of energy consumption. The demonstrate results show that our proposal is more reliable and flexible as well as multifunctional than the existed proposals and can prolong network lifetime. In addition, this paper introduces a tuple space based access control strategy to prevent the agent randomly from accessing the tuple space. Finally, this paper presents an example for data integration with the mobile agent based middleware using publish/subscribe mechanism in management system for forestry. The results indicate that a complex application can be implemented simply in the middleware.
