Virtual botany has been the research focus of computer graphics and agroforestry for a long time. In recent years, along with the progress of virtual botany research, it is not only the requirement to build the whole geometric model of the plant ,but also begin to study the details of organs and realistic simulation. The plant leaf modeling and rendering is one of the most challenging problem in virtual botany due to its complex morphological and optical characteristics. In this paper, we present a method of realistic leaf modeling and rendering based on the leaf image. We extract the leaf outline and venation by using the method of leaf image edge detection and marching square algorithm. The leaf was uniformly triangulated by using the optimization algorism of Delaunay mesh. Finally, using the leaf vein as the skeleton for deformation, to morph the 2D leaf mesh by using Laplace iterative method, then, we can get the leaf model which has natural deformation. Experiments show that ,Compared to previous modeling method, the method of this paper highlights the important role of leaf vein for triangulation and deformation, and the leaf model better reflects the true characteristics of plant leaves, it's useful to simulate the natural deformation for leaf mesh. At last, the rendering leaf images demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in the leaf shape modeling and rendering.
