Animation of natural phenomena has been a hotspot and one of the most difficult tasks in Compute Graphics. It has been found wide applications in many domains such as computer animation, landscaping, architecture, special effects of movie, computer games, battlefield simulation and virtual reality, etc. As part of natural phenomena, botanical scene has held much attention, and grass scene is the most could-be-everywhere scene. Increasing the sense of reality and efficiency of rendering are two main targets.Major Technologies of botanical scene modeling has been researched, including 3D-structure modeling and fractal technology, particle system, and volumetric texture.After classifying grass scene, grass-cluster scene has been researched. The main difficulty for animation of grass-cluster scene is that it is hard to manipulate with interweaving of neighboring grass-clusters. Since it is obvious to see puncture, it goes far away from the original goal of increasing the sense of reality; to avoid puncture, it looks like no interweaving which is the natural case. To solve this difficulty, 3D-structure modeling has been adopted and a new method of modeling of grass-cluster scene has been created and detailed, including thread-skeleton model, single grass-cluster grid model, grass-cluster scene grid model, and modeling of grass-cluster scene.Motion control of grass-cluster under wind has been researched, resulting in wind model and methods of motion control of grass cluster under wind being introduced. Optimizing of rendering has been researched, including geometric LOD rendering of grass-cluster scene, PBR of grass-cluster LOD models, and rendering using MIP-Mapping like method.A grass-cluster scene animation system is designed. Modeling, motion control and optimizing of rendering has been implemented in this system. Some result images and result data has been released and analyzed.
