Research On Descriptive Metadata Repository Model Of Digital Libraries

With the continuous development of digital libraries, metadata is playing a more and more important role in both digital library collection organization and information organization, especially a fundamental role in information organization. The descriptive metadata has been gradually recognized of its value in the description of information objects because of its own characteristics. In the situation of large-scale use and popularization of metadata, how to manage them has become the focus question. And the establishments of an open and unified descriptive metadata repository model and a management normative system have become the critical problems to be resolved in both metadata management field and digital library field.This dissertation is divided into five parts for research purposes:(1) The dissertation analyzed the definition and the factors of digital libraries. And it introduced the role metadata is playing in digital libraries and the concept of metadata, and then it analyzed the fields metadata could be applied to. It also emphasized on introducing descriptive metadata and some common descriptive metadata norms.(2) The paper introduced the concept of metadata management, and focused on metadata repository, which is one of the mainstream models in metadata management. It analyzed the value of metadata management and its current research as well.(3) The dissertation did some in-depth studies of the MDA framework, UML, MOF, XMI, and CWM. Some feasibility studies were done of whether the basic CWM technology and MDA framework could be applied to the digital library field. It also focused on the feasibility study of whether the basic CWM technology could be used in the descriptive metadata repository system. At last it analyzed the constraints on the application of MDA and CWM in this respect. (4) An administrative metadata model as well as its meaning and application were introduced. In reference to the large-scale commercial metadata repository systems, with the use of administrative metadata and the facade mode, the paper conceived a descriptive metadata repository system model for digital library made up of 3 modules as the collection module, the processing module and service module.(5) Follow-up developments of the system model were summarized.
