The fast growing IP traffic promotes increasing demands on the capacity and bit rate of the network. The DWDM technology provides a platform to exploit the potential huge capacity of the optical fibers and satisfy this bandwidth demand. Currently three switching paradigms are discussed on WDM networks, i.e., circuit switching (wavelength routing), packet switching and burst switching. Among them circuit switching is relatively easy to implement but lacks the flexibility to cope with the fluctuating traffic and changing links.Optical packet switching (OPS) is considered as an ideal optical switching model, and the optical header label technology can realize OPS, called as optical label packet switching (OLPS) or optical label switching (OLS). In this dissertation, some MλOLPS realization technologies and MλOLPS networks elements technologies are studied. My study on MλOLPS consists of three parts. The first part is the study on MλOLPS mechanism and realization technologies, the architectures and realizations of MλOLPS networks and elements. Moreover, the evolution from current networks to the OLS networks also is studied. The second part illuminates the MλOLPS testbed firstly constructed in the world. At the same time, the experiment results are exhibited. In the third part, an application study of MλOLPS to the MAN is projected.
