Apple is one of the main varieties of fruit in China. In order to improve the yield and quality of apples, pruning is necessary. Most of the prunings methods of apple trees are learned and summed up by apple-planting farmers after long-term practice and experience, and the transmission of the technology mainly rely on experienced farmers who teach the skills hand by hand to the youth. By modeling apple trees, we can create a realistic computer model of the trunk and branches of apple trees, and build a virtual tree platform with which we can quickly and easily simulate pruning. As a result, we can provide a new way of pruning teaching and training.Firstly, the research methods of virtual plant are introduced, and the theory of L systems is described. Secondly, based on the above researches, this article combined the morphology characteristic of open center-shaped apple trees, with the use of virtual plant simulation software L-studio, to simulate the dynamic three-dimensional shape of open center-shaped apple trees at different growth stages. Through the use of randomized production to control the growth of trunks and branches, and the pipe model to simulate the width growth of branches, we realized the basic form of the model. Finally, we simulated pruning operation based on morphological model of apple trees. L systems theory is the theoretical basis for model building; the paper summarizes the principle of L systems, different types and characteristics of L system simulation modeling of plants. The measurement of fruit tree structure modeling is the reality basis of this paper to explore the use of virtual instruments to measure the structure of the tree. The experimental results show proof of this new method that it is rapid, efficient, and accurate, and it can be useful for the next phase of the virtual plant modeling.The results of this study are as follows: we built the trunk and branches model of open-center shaped apple trees based on the analysis and measurement of apple tree structure. And we implemented the model with context-sensitive and parametric L systems in use of the modular research methods of L systems. At last, we simulated the pruning of apple trees based on tree model.
