Since research institutes in the United States put forward the visible human project in 1989, the concept of visual human has attracted the whole world's attention."Visible human"takes advantages of current methods of medical scanning and digitize human into a visual form to replace the real human subjects for experiment purposes through mainframe computer and analyzes with morphologic, physical and biologic information .The research of visual hand is a part and parcel in visual human research."Visual hand"involves exacting descriptive physical and biologic process of human hand with mathematics methods, and establishing relevant and equivalent digital hand model. The research of visual hand modeling is of great significance in many research feilds, such as clinical applications, physiology research, bionic manipulator research, healing treatment, deaf and dumb education, and so on.In this project, the hand images are originally obtained from the first Chinese visible woman dataset (CVH-2). The important anatomic structures of the hand are pretreated and segmented using Adobe Photoshop based on anatomic knowledge to extract the data of main hand structures,such as skin and bones. The software of visual hand system, which could satisfy the needs of clincical observation with excellent visual effect and high running efficiency, is programmed with independent packaged components in Visual Studio 2005 and Visualization Toolkit. Many algorithms are packed in this software, including the loading of segmented images in bmp formate in arbitrary path, display of multi-pattern discretionary slices using multiple planar reconstruction algorithms. Then the different algorithms of surface rendering and volume rendering are adopted and to reconstruct the segmented images into three-dimensional visible anatomy models of human hand, which consists of skin, radiu, ulna, carpal bone (including the scaphoid bone, lunate, triquetral bone, pisiform bone, trapezium bone, trapezoid bone, capitate bone, hamate bone),1st metacarpal bone, 2nd metacarpal bone, 3rd metacarpal bone, 4th metacarpal bone, 5th metacarpal bone, 1st phalanx, 2nd phalanx, 3rd phalanx, 4th phalanx, 5th phalanx(including proximal phalanx,middle phalanx,distal phalanx) . This model can be observed from any arbitrary angle and direction. Moreover, the clear observation of the special relationship among the different anatomic structures of the hand is also allowed. And three-dimensional measurements, including coordinates, distance and angle measurement, which could be used to hand motorial function detection and gesture analysis research, is carried out using real-time interaction of the mouse clicks. In addition, the software, which consists independent package components, is programmed with high efficiency, strong portability and expansibility. Finally, this project builds a simple hand knowledge management system using Oracle database and Visual Studio 2005. The system can be used to query or modify of the anatomic knowledge of human hand, explore the knowledge acquisition and knowledge representation of anatomical, physiological and pathological information or other human biological data, build the core framework of basical data platform for digital human research, making it public data platform uesd by different users, provide criterion of data conformity and basis for digital human's further research.
