With the development of telecommunications networks and the improvement of user needs, SDH optical transmission system exposes in a number of issues: the complexity of the operational configuration, low bandwidth utilization rate, a single way to protect and large amount of maintenance. In order to effectively solve the above problems, a new type of network system came into being, which is automatically switched optical network (ASON), which is commonly referred to as intelligent optical network. The transmission network gradually intelligentizing are inevitable, whether form the development of technology development, or from solving the problem of the network. ASON is becoming the hot application of the transmission network. This topic is an example of local transmission networks of China unicom to research applications of ASON technology in the telecommunications network. Analyzing the study and accumulating relevant experience lay a solid foundation for specific applications of ASON technology and equipment in current networks.1. By analysing current transmission network and existing problems, proposed the necessity of introducing ASON technology, and presented a rough architecture , technical features, main advantages, current status and development trends of ASON technology. We can see advantages of ASON technology as well as the revolutionary changes of networks brought by ASON through analysing.:(1) Better network performance. The optical signals can be carried out on the optical layer due to the introduction of OXC and OADM,. This feature can reduce the signal delay and signal jitter caused by IP routers which can, help to ensure quality of service (QoS: Quality of Service).(2) Real-time and dynamic control of traffic engineering. That is one of the main ASON features, which allows the network to adjust the network topology real-time and dynamically based on the current traffic needs.This function can prevent network congestion and make network bandwidth allocated according to actual traffic needs.(3) Fast and effective network protection and recovery mechanism, that is, when the event network fault happens, management plane and control plane of ASON work together, to ensure fault information spreading in the network timely and accurately, and spare or restored routing starting quickly. Thereby enhancing the survivability of the network.(4) Good equipment interoperability and network scalability, through the definition of a unified, standard network interface, different network operators'equipment can easily achieve interoperability; if the network interface is further equipped with various kinds of functions such as automatic resource discovery and automatic business discovery, it can further reduce the equipment requirements for interconnection of human intervention and manual configuration. Under ideal circumstances it can achieve the funchtion similar to "plug and play" of computer equipment.2. Focused on the summary and comparison of performance parameters of the equipment from different ASON manufacturers The paper introuduces delivery plane, control plane, management plane, the protection of the restoration, as well as signaling communications network of the ASON equipment from Huawei, ZTE, Fiberhome, Lucent ASON.Then, comparative analysis of performance parameters is done.Based on the comparative analysis above the domestic telecom operators for the actual network and business needs, taking into account the telecom operators have a higher requirements on the cross-cutting capacity of the delivery plane as well as higher performance requirements when passive optical network network upgrade for online smoothing ASON optical network. So Huawei ASON equipment is choosed, a specific ASON network-wide solution is given.3. Research on applications of ASON technology in modern telecommunication networks.Carried out an in-depth research on ASON-building programs for a core level of Unicom local transmission networks. Analysed the local transmission network development ideas, principles, and strategy; analysed a local network of China Unicom's current status existing problems, development goals, ASON's introduction and evolution steps; finally, in an ASON-building programs on the core layer of the local network, analysed an actual application of ASON transmission network, as well as the tremendous changes and improvement of the transmission networks. We can get the following conclusions through analysing:, After using ASON network technology, the core layer of the unicom local transport network made a revolutionary progress compared to the original SDH ring network. More specifically, the network is more safer; network adjustment is more flexible; resource utilization rates are higher; maintenance is more convenient; and more value-added business are provided.The current ASON technology and equipment are not perfect, and ASON standards should be improved. There are not lots of ASON application cases and commercial networks on a long time test for trial operation in China However, in ASON modern telecommunication network, ASON development in the transmission network must be the mainstream direction of evolution according to the direction of technology development and the actual situation of the network. And ASON will have wide prospects for the development and application.
