As the development of sensors technology, microelectronic technology, embedded computing technology and wireless communication technology, Wireless sensor network have a rapid develop speed and become a new computer interdisciplinary field, with very broad application prospects. WSN is a self-organized network, which is formed of a large number of cheap sensor node deployed around the detected areas by wireless communication. Its purpose is collaborate sense and collect the information of interesting area, and send to the observer. Wild animal monitor is an important application of the wireless sensor network.Based on the application background of wild animals' monitor, we make some research on the problems which encountered on the wild animals' monitor which is applied by the routing of wireless sensor network. The primary goals in the design of the routing protocol which will be used in the wireless sensor network are energy conversation and the effectively extended life cycle of the network. In the paper, we first analyzed the current routing protocols which are wildly used in the wireless sensor network, towards the existing weak points such as high energy consumption and the networks' short life cycle, based on the SELAR routing protocol we made a routing protocol improvement. We call the name of the improved routing protocol is EELAR. In EELAR routing protocol we made an improvement on both forward strategy and energy-saving strategy. The major works are followings:(1) Towards the forward strategy of SELAR, we proposed a new forwarding algorithm. The main ideal of the new algorithm is: When the nodes need to send data, the node travel the neighbor's routing tables first, and then choose a neighbor node to send out the data according to the minim forwarding cost which is calculated by some information such as node's energy, position and the forwarding data size and so on.(2) We proposed three kinds of energy-saving strategies based on the requirements of the Long-term wild monitoring. First, through adjusting the transmission power on the Communication module we achieve the goal of energy-saving. Second, through simple data fusion mechanism on the core node, we make the energy consumption among the nodes in the network more equal. Last, we carry out the sleep mechanism in the whole network. After through the three kinds of energy-saving strategies we extended the network's life cycle.(3) We have tested the EELAR both on NS2 Simulation platform and real environment, the test result shows that the improved routing protocol's network have a low energy consumption, long network existing time and balanced energy consumption among nods. And all of these can fully satisfy the needs of wild animals monitoring.
