Recently, Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) has drawn great interests for providing large capacity, high speed and wide coverage as well as reliable transmission, good scalability and low initial investment. As more and more users take advantage of WMN to access Internet, capacity becomes a restriction for the development of WMN. In this dissertation, we propose several mechanisms to improve the capacity of WMN.Firstly, we transplant our testbed from Linux kernel 2.4 to kernel 2.6 and establish TJU MeshNet Testbed by integrating multi-interface and multi-channel into Mesh Backbone Network. Secondly, we propose a multi-interface routing protocol (MI-DSR) and implement it on TJU MeshNet Testbed. MI-DSR protocol allows users to route flexibly among multiple paths whose number have been increased as routers using multiple interfaces and multiple IP addresses. Thirdly, in order to improve the overall WMN performance, we design a load balancing algorithm which has been integrated into MI-DSR. The Algorithm optimizes resource allocation and improves the utilization of resources in WMN. Finally, we explore on dynamic channel switching and implement it on TJU MeshNet Testbed, in order to improve the overall WMN performance. Dynamic channel switching allows wireless interface to choose appropriate channel according to the network load condition, so that it reduces interference among interfaces and increase the whole capacity of WMN.Through extensive experiments on TJU MeshNet Testbed, the results show that the use of multiple interfaces on mesh routers greatly improves the network capacity. The results also demonstrate that our load balancing algorithm with MI-DSR protocol can effectively utilize the channel resources and improve network throughput.
