Conformal arrays will find their potential and promising applications in a variety of fields ranging from space-borne, airborne, ship-borne, and missile-borne radar, space vehicles and wireless communications to sonar, etc. Their benefits include reduction of aerodynamic drag, wide angle coverage, space saving, potential increase in available aperture, reduction of Radar Cross-Section (RCS) and elimination of radome-induced bore-sight error, etc. Whereas conformal arrays also present many challenges to the designers, including varying element normal due to curvature, strong mutual coupling and serious cross-polarization effect, etc. This dissertation investigates pattern synthesis techniques for conformal arrays chiefly. To analyze conformal arrays, a model is presented firstly. Considering polarization, it describes how to transform the element pattern in local coordinate system to the pattern in global coordinate system in detail. And a uniform circular array is analyzed, which shows some basic characteristics of conformal arrays. Then, an improved pattern synthesis algorithm based on adaptive arrays theory for conformal arrays is presented. With this algorithm based on the criterion of maximum signal-to-noise ratio, the values of the weighting function are iterated to obtain optimal weights to steer the main beam in a given direction and yield the sidelobe meeting specified levels. This algorithm compared with the similar algorithms, its iteration coefficient is robust to synthesis conditions, and its convergence is steady and effective. The synthesized pattern that is nearly the same as the desired pattern can be obtained. Finally, an alternating projection method is presented to synthesize the pattern of co-polarization and cross-polarization. And it is a flexible and highly efficient synthesis method.
