As a key method for improving video quality and the efficiency of video compression, video preprocessing implemented in the video capture devices plays an important role in video telecommunication. In this dissertation, the techniques of image and video backlight compensation are studied in detail.Image backlight compensation is to compensate the luminance of the images photographed in the backlight environment and to keep the naturalness and smoothness of the whole image so that the human visual system (HVS) could be comforted. According to the luminance histogram property of the backlight image, a new compensation method is proposed. Experimental results verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.Video backlight compensation is to compensate the luminance of the video captured in the backlight environment, and at the same time the luminance of the video sequence should be guaranteed to be stable. Based on a comprehensive investigation on shot change detection, a new method to compensate backlight video by detecting borders of shots is developed, the effectiveness of which could be demonstrated by extensive experimental results.The two compensation methods have already been successfully applied to multimedia products of Huawei Technology Cooperation Limited.
