Recent years, with the rapid development of Astronautics science and technology, people began to quicken their steps to exploring the space. For remote sensing image data supplied a lot of information from the space, it has more textures, resolution and less correlation, redundant. Under the bandwidth resource are limited, an effective data compression must be adopted to bring down the amount of data.CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) has recently adopted a recommendation for image data compression, with a final release expected in 2005.its compression ratio improved and algorithm complexity decreased. The algorithm adopted in the recommendation consists of a two dimensional discrete wavelet transform of the image, followed by progressive bit-plane coding of the transformed data. The algorithm can provide both lossless and loss compression, and allows a user to directly control the compressed data volume or the fidelity with which the wavelet-transformed data can be reconstructed. The algorithm makes a balance between compression ratio and arithmetic complication, and support the high speed low-power hardware implementation. On the other hand, Blackfin 561,as the new generation 32-bit processor, have a powerful ability ,such as parallel process and DMA, the Blackfin 561 provides an RISC-like microprocessor instruction set, flexible single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) capabilities and a high effective coding.The main tasks accomplished in this paper are as follow: First, make a deep understanding of CCSDS image data compression. after that, the C language encoder program are learned, then some improvement and optimization is made for the implementation on the DSP. Experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the optimization.Finally, we summarize the work what we have done and put forward the future direction.
