The array-based high resolution direction-finding techniques are new technique which are developed from the beamforming and the estimation techniques. After more than 40 years' researching, the experts of all over the world in this field have proposed a number of algorithms and investigated their performances. It can be finded many applications, such as mobile communication, electronic reconnaissance, parameter estimation, signal discrimination, etc.There are mainly two types of algorithms used for spatial spectrum estimation: one is based on Bayesian Maximum Likelihood method, like the ML (Maximum Likelihood)algorithm, Maximal Entropy method and etc., the other is based on the spatial decomposition or projection of correlation matrix, this kind of algorithm includeVector Characterization Method, MUSIC (multiple signal classification) algorithm, projection Matrix Method, etc. MUSIC is a classic spatial spectrum estimation algorithm that has a super high resolution and is widely used today. However, it cannot estimate successfully the azimuths and elevations of signals that are correlated.The key work of this paper places in the MUSIC algorithm improvement, as well as, in realizing the Forward/Backward Spatial Smoothing MUSIC Algorithm based on the hardware system, which is unified by DSP and FPGA. Obtaining from the basic MUSIC algorithm, the factors which affects the performance of MUSIC algorithm and the effective adjustment method are analysised in this thesis. Because of the performance of MUSIC algorithm drop seriously, even expires, when it estimates to the coherent source, introduce spatial smoothing MUSIC, MMUSIC and spatial filtering MUSIC in the thesis, which three methods for coherent signals ,have their own advabtages and disadvantages respectively. Demonstrate this three kind of improved MUSIC algorithm based on the MATLAB simulation experiments, and validate the ultra resolution ability of them.The hardware system involved in this paper is the hardware processing platform, which take floating point DSP processing chip TMS320C6713 and FPGA processing chip EPF10K10TC144-4 as core processor. In view of the primary processes of the forward/backward spatial smoothing MUSIC algorithm, put forward a scheme of it in DSP &FPGA software environment, and realize spatial DOA estimation when the incident signals are coherent. Through the PCI-6112 data acquisition card, the datas of the signals, which are simulated by computer, are gived to and operated in the DSP chip. The DOA of the incident signals are searched parallelly in FPGA chip. The DOA datas are transmitted through the RS-232 serial port to PC, and demonstrated under the MATLAB software environment. The principle, steps of realizing and the procedure flow graph of each algorithm have been descripted in the article.
