One important sign of the information age is the amounts of information are growing rapidly. Coupled with the progress in networking technology, network storage is being deployed increasingly as the main stream storage infrastructure. The rapid growth of information resources also poses a challenge to the reliability and scalability of the network storage system, as well as the sharing of information resources.Storage virtualization refers to the separation of physical storage devices from users, it is an abstraction of storage devices and storage systems, showing a logical view to the user. Storage virtualization is to create an abstraction layer between physical storage devices and storage systems, shielding the complexity of the system. This thesis introduces several mainstream network storage technologies, the definition of the storage virtualization and storage protocols. Architecture and implementation of an IP-SAN is covered. Then proposes a storage virtualization system architecture with detail description of each function module. Focus on the principle and realization of the LVM and RAID technology. An extension of Webmin, a Linux GUI management tool, has been developed to do Web-based virtual storage management and has functions such as disaster recovery, backup, and so on. An analytical model for virtual storage reliability is developed and several RAID configurations are studied. Finally Iometer is used to test system performance, followed by in-depth analysis of the test results.
