Recently, in order to implement the effective communication during the battle, the PRR (Personal Role Radio) has played a more and more important role in modern battle. The PPR requires low power, high performance, easy maintenance, and communication with the current tactical radio. Thus, our radio adopts software radio technology and direct demodulation from middle frequency.Firstly, from the analysis and comparison of the performance of various commonly used digital modulation methods, a brief characteristic of modulation and demodulation techniques in fast ultra-shortwave frequency-hopping communication system are given. And we come to a conclusion that it is necessary and feasible to use GMSK in fast ultra-shortwave frequency-hopping communication system. Secondly, based on the analysis and comparison of GMSK modulation and demodulation schemes, we propose an algorithm for GMSK modulation based on DDS and DSP, as well as a two-bit differential detection of GMSK using decision feedback algorithm based on DSP. Moreover, we present simulations of modulation and demodulation algorithm. Simulation results show that two-bit differential detection of GMSK using decision feedback algorithm gives better bit error rate performance compared with traditional two-bit differential detection in Gaussian channel. Thirdly, we introduce the frequency hopping synchronization control strategy, and analyze the performance of synchronization. Finally, we design the hardware and software of base band module of PRR.
