For the more and more rapidly growth of the internet flux, network analyzing and statistic in application layer and QoS in application layer becomes more important, this thesis analyzed the TCP/IP layer structure, common application protocol packets exchange and the principle of router and QoS, based on these analysis, do research of IP packet classification in application layer on router and it has much practical value. This thesis analyzed the foundation of the TCP/IP protocol and characteristics of some common application protocols, through the analysis the author have got more information for protocol recognition, and it is the base of the design of recognition system and recognition method.Through the analysis of IP packet level structure, the author gives assumption based on single step process, based on the analysis of special demand of routers, gives the idea of making special function separate from the core function of recognition, and designed a rather wide-adapted IP packet recognition system. For the recognition system, this thesis give a emphasis introduction of Session maintenance, timer process, process on transport layer, etc,it's adapted to the recognition system, and can be rather wide-adapted and have high performance comparatively.Based on the characteristics of protocol recognition and the design of recognition system, the author gives the method of some common application protocol recognition; verify the system function and wide-adapted character, primary attempt to expand recognition ability dynamically. For this system, the author has done many experiments of function and performance, gives part of the test data. This system has been used on routers and got a rather good effect.
