Followed with the rise of next generation digital home model, it has brought the gateway into focus in general as the heart equipment of digital home. The traditional gateway usually only acts as the connection hub for in and out of the family network and it's unable to meet the requirements required by the next generation digital home on information security, high QoS (Quality of Service), equipment automatic detection now. Thus it is necessary to research and design the intelligent digital media gateway in order to make the gateway equipment satisfying the demands by next generation digital home. After briefly describing the domestic network protocol DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), it analyzes the content composition, technology foundation and shortages of it further. And designs and schemes a high QoS framework used in new intelligent media gateway after pointing out the QoS structural defects about the traditional one.The hardware platform of this system uses Intel Ixp425 CPU (Central Processing Unit) and Sigma EM8620L media chip as the core, mainly consisting of CPU module, media processing module, memory module and so on. And the system software architecture builds upon it and encapsulates the achievements in DLNA and QoS research. The software system contains there layers, that's low level layer, middleware layer and application layer. Furthermore, the middleware layer could be divided into protocol stack, QoS management, media processing and graphics processing four subsystems, which will provide functions on intelligent, high QoS, graphical interface mapping and Audio/Video data processing respectively.In the low level layer, it mainly designs and implements a bootloader software module with file compressing and decompressing function, which could download the compressed Linux kernel file into the RAM(Random Access Memory) of object board via Ethernet and then execute it. In middleware layer, it mainly discusses the way of realizing DLNA protocol and QoS modules. As the main point, also the DLNA media player and some related application modules in application layer are designed and implemented, especially discussing on how to apply DLNA protocol stack to them and the structure of player engine.In short, this system is combined with the most popular home network protocol DLNA, makes some innovation in the equipment QoS architecture and the design of it is distinguished and orbicular. So it highly satisfies the demands of the market for the next generation digital home.
