Information hiding is a whole new technology for information security protection. By its means, secret information is hidden into host signal, which can be transmitted and shared in public, with secret information not recognized by the public. It covers the research areas of communications and information theory, cryptography, digital image processing, network security, etc, and has a great many applications in hiding data, copyright protection, secret communications, and so on. One important branch of information hiding technology, steganography, with the feature of using image as host signal, has become a research focus. In a word, steganography technology researching is with high academic significance and applied value. In this paper, firstly we give a brief introduction about the background, basic terminology, general model and applications of information hiding technology. Then the principles of the steganography technology are discussed in detail. Furthermore, BPCS-steganography based on human visual system is expatiated, and its advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. For compensating the BPCS security deficiency, we propose an improved BPCS-steganography, which is easy implemented and adaptive. Experiment results show this improved method can properly counteract the attack of complexity histogram. Finally, an information hiding system based on improved BPCS-steganography is presented. At the same time, an image-scrambling algorithm was put forward, which was so effective in pre-processing and post-processing process of an information hiding system. Experiments show that the system match the requests of information hiding technology, the imperceptible characteristic of the embedded image signal is good, the bit error is low and the system has good ability to defend against the steganalysis attack.
