With the rapid development of network communication and digital signal processing technology, various IP-technology-oriented applications are widely used. As a typical IP application, VoIP gains much attention.Now the VoIP gateway is playing an important role in IP phone, and it can be used between different communication networks. DSP (Digital Signal Processor), which is the most important part of VoIP gateways, is the key to implement the translation among signal, interface and data. DSP driver provides the controling interface between the DSP hardware and user application for the users. As a result, a qualified DSP driver becomes meaningful in actual practice.Firstly, this thesis introduced VoIP and the future of VoIP gateways, and analyzed in depth the correlative interface standards and VoIP signal protocols related to DSP functions. Second, the thesis analyzed the requirement of DSP and DSP hardware design, and then brought forward a DSP driver design based on a Linux system. Further, the thesis depicted details in the design and analyzed the system architecture and the implementation of each module. At last, the thesis designed some test schemes to validate its capability. The result on different test topologies presented this generic design matched the requirement of the qualified communication services among different communication networks.The usage of this generic DSP driver design has been adopted in the residential gateway project already. The result and practice have proved that it is stable and matches several requirements.
