Sheet metals are made up by uniform thickness plates. Based on the analysis of the sheet metal technology, the advantages and disadvantages of traditional deployment methods are summarized. The problems of deployment-drawing and optimum layout are studied by modern information technology using analytic method.Firstly, some basic theories about the first basic form of basic surface deployment and isometric correspondence of surface are introduced in this paper. Then, the key technology of AutoCAD redevelopment with Visual Basic is investigated. Finally, using tools such as VB6.0 and AutoCAD2004, several common parametric CAD systems for deploying sheet metals are designed and developed. Man-machine interface is designed based on visualized feature of VB that orientated object, which can make it easily to input parameters for users and provide an efficient, accurate, practical and reliable tool for parametric deployment of sheet metals.The optimal problem of sheet metal layout is discussed. The mathematical models of general single and double arrangement of nesting method are established, corresponding algorithms are also provided. The layout problem of rectangular parts is studied. An algorithm is worked out based on its specialty after the target-function is given.
