Recent years, the domestic and foreign emerged to the research of new passive detection system. Simultaneously, as a result of the rapid development of digital signal processing chip technology, some direction finding algorithms which originally have big computation quantity are now becoming possible to apply in the actual project. Therefore, the topic we study is the method and its realization for Estimating two-dimensional(2-D) direction-of-arrival(DOA) of signals.In aspect of algorithm research, based on the common ESPRIT algorithm, the paper introduced the improved ESPRIT algorithm and the ESPRIT algorithm based on forth-order cumulant processing and space -time processing, compared with the existing ESPRIT algorithm, they have notable improvement in some aspects. Based on the improved ESPRIT algorithm, we adopt the back-forward smoothing technology to solve the problem of 2-D DOA estimation in coherent source, this method can improve the array utilization. At the same time, we give a modified ESPRIT(MESPRIT) algorithm to solve the problem that smoothing technology can decrease array aperture, MESPRIT algorithm have the ability to process coherent signals, Simultaneously, it can effectively improve the direction finding performance of the original ESPRIT algorithm under the complex signal condition and has a higher stability, and can be realized easily.In aspect of hardware realization, we proposed the design scheme that takes high speed DSP and FPGA as the core of the real-time direction finding processing system. We give detailed introduction about the software design of system. At last, we take a test for the system, the result proved the probability of the system scheme, it can provide some technical references for the further research of direction finding system.
