Sponsored by the research projects named"verification and solutions for mobile constellation satellite communication system"and"implementation of on-board ATM switching and signaling system", a study is made in this dissertation for the user capacity of satellite mobile communications system with inter-satellite link, and the ATM switch fabric with the shared memory and the buffer strategy.The dissertation begins with discussing the issues of satellite communication system, on-broad switching, inter-satellite link, satellite network based on the ATM and the delay of the satellite network. On the basis of Erlang B formula, a formula of calculateing the capacity and relay channels of satellite communication system is presented with the simplified routing and uniform distribution traffic. The performances of two examples are given by using that formula, including a 48-satellite constellation communication system and the Iridium constellation. Second, a discussion of ATM switch fabric is made, and the switch fabrics of shared memory and crossbar switch fabric are addressed in detail, including the switching mechanisms, parameter choice and buffering strategy. In addition, several means of buffer management are studied. Finally, an ATM switch of the complete shared-buffer strategy is modeled and simulated with the OPNET Modeler. The simulation results obtained in different scenarios are analyzed. The dissertation is summarized at its end and the issues to be studied further are pointed out.
